(Toronto, ON) The Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario (IBAO) applauds the Ontario government’s recent announcement to increase the fines and penalties for distracted driving. This is a great step toward improving road safety.

According to the Ontario Government, under this new legislation, the offence for careless driving causing death or bodily harm could lead to an increase in fines, license suspension and imprisonment. The government indicated that on average, one person is killed on Ontario’s roads every 17 hours.

“Ontario brokers pride themselves on protecting the drivers in their community,” said IBAO President Traci Boland. “These new fines and penalties are a good step to ensure consumers know that distracted driving is serious and dangerous – the consequences of doing so should reflect that. From our vantage point, these fines and penalties are a small price to pay relative to the risk of severe injury or death. Brokers are encouraging all drivers to protect themselves and others who they share the road with.”
