IBAO President Joseph Carnevale and COO Brett Boadway represented brokers and Ontario consumers at last week’s Pre-Budget Consultation leading up to the provincial government’s release of its annual budget. This is the third year we’ve been asked to participate.

Similar to the last two years, Ontario Auto remained the leading issue, with a new sense of urgency—difficulties with Ontario’s auto product have begun affecting other areas of insurance. On behalf of the 13,000+ licensed brokers we represent, we feel it’s our responsibility to alert MPPs on the impact Ontario auto is having on consumers.

In addition to auto, we addressed the hard market’s impact to both brokers and consumers, the need for flood mitigation and the importance of supporting Ontario’s small and medium-sized businesses. Full comments can be viewed here.

“Members of the Finance Committee were very appreciative of our continued advocacy for consumers,” said Joseph. “They were interested and receptive to our suggestions on auto insurance reform and how all levels of government have a role to play in reducing the effects of flooding on consumers in high-risk areas.”

“It’s great to continuously see how respected the broker channel is in the eyes of MPPs,” said Brett. “They know us. They understand the value we bring to their constituents. And their questions reflect that respect.”

Pre-Budget Consultations are held across the province. A number of brokers were invited to participate this year including Bruce Mackay and Past IBAO Presidents Brian Purcell and Steve Wagler.

Thank you to all brokers who contribute to our political advocacy efforts. If you’d like to get involved with our initiatives, get in touch.
