The Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario (IBAO) is pleased to announce the launch of a new e-learning course Ethical Steps: Facing Ethical Situations in Insurance. In response to RIBO’s introduction of an ethics continuing education requirement for brokers, which came into effect October 1st, the IBAO leveraged its new learning management system My IBAO Learning Path to facilitate the course.

“It’s important to be nimble and be able to act quickly to changes across the industry,” said IBAO CEO Colin Simpson. “One of the main objectives of our new e-learning platform is to be able to respond quickly to changing educational requirements and have the ability to create timely, relevant education for our members.”

RIBO’s new requirement aims to tackle ethical dilemmas that brokers face in the day-to-day of their jobs. “The course we’ve designed provides brokers with a framework to address ethical situations on a consistent basis,” said IBAO Education Supervisor & Instructional Designer, Kevin O’Hare. “With this training, brokers will be able to successfully recognize and manage situations that could result in conflicts or potential conflicts given their professional and legal obligations to consumers.”

This is one of the first courses designed specifically for brokers to acquire continuing education hours in the ethics category. Brokers must earn a minimum of one hour of ethics training per year as part of their total continuing education hours.

“Brokers face ethical dilemmas every day in insurance – learning how to navigate them is imperative,” said Simpson. “With this new training our members will learn best practices and be guided to make the right decision in challenging situations.”

This course is free to IBAO Members and is available on-demand through the My IBAO Learning Path platform. This is the latest addition to a growing library of custom-built online offerings which include courses on cannabis legalization, Ontario auto and travel/health insurance. Creating these courses and moving CAIB exams online are the result of IBAO’s efforts to evolve their broker education experience.
