We’ve got a brand new eLearning course created in partnership with the Canadian Elevator Contractors Association (CECA) on Private Residence Elevators. CECA is an industry group that advises government on building codes and other matters related to elevators.

This course is intended to inform brokers of the current building code regulations—or lack of them—around private residence elevators at all three levels of government. As our population ages, it’s important to know that your Personal Lines clients might be making these changes to their houses without your knowledge.

“We wanted to get the word out that these home elevators can present a real risk,” said CECA Board Member Don Sanchez, who also facilitates the course. “People are putting elevators into their homes without any government regulations or oversight—no product certification, no need to hire certified contractor to install them, no maintenance requirements and no building code enforcement. And we’re seeing a sharp increase in this trend.”

“It’s an important opportunity for IBAO to collaborate with other associations on specific matters,” said Kevin O’Hare, Director of Education, IBAO. “Although this is a niche issue today, the growth of private residence elevators in the coming years makes it an important one and we’re glad to be able to raise it with our Members.”

This course is available for free, exclusively to IBAO Members and it’s accredited for 1 Technical Hour.
