IBAO Launches New Education Program for Brokers

Posted by IBAO

In the ongoing commitment IBAO has to providing innovative programs to broker members, the association is announcing the launch of our new pilot program Beyond Best in Class (BBiC). The new program is aimed at educating brokers in business best practices.

The BBiC pilot program launched in Cambridge, Ontario yesterday, with a group of eight brokerages participating. The focus is to encourage brokers to ‘change the mindset of the traditional broker’ about their employees, clients, insurance company partners and day-to-day business operations.

BBiC is designed to strengthen the skills of the broker community. Educating brokers on the latest business ideas and practices will help to promote a balance between thinking and doing.

Following the pilot group, the program will be opened up to IBAO’s full membership later this year.  IBAO is very excited to offer this new program and provide unlimited access to the best possible educational programs for its membership.

Stay tuned for the full launch of this program in the Fall!

Gore Mutual Insurance Company is the proud sponsor of the pilot group.

This Fall, the 2010 IBAO Awards of Excellence were presented to some of the most outstanding insurance brokers and brokerages throughout Ontario.

This year's award recipients were selected based on their community and professional contributions, which exemplify the great impact insurance brokers have in the industry and within the general public.

The winners of the 2010 Awards of Excellence were:

Thunder Bay Insurance Services Ltd. (TBI):
TBI was awarded Brokerage of the Year for their continued outstanding contribution to their community. Exceeding their involvement and presence in the community, TBI was thrilled to receive this recognition by their peers.

Ottawa Insurance Brokers Association (OIBA):
Continued support and overall visibility in the community were two factors contributing to the selection of OIBA as the 2010 Affiliate of the Year for the second consecutive year. Year after year OIBA and its members actively participate in community events, support local organizations and host their own awareness and fundraising events.

John Baizana:
With over 20 years of industry related experience, John Baizana from Baizana Insurance Brokers was honored as the 2010 Individual Broker of the Year. John has donated countless hours over the last year through participation in community events, planning and executing his own fundraising events and sponsoring local sports teams. John is the co-founder of a not-for-profit organization situated in Ottawa and was a recipient of the Ottawa Business Journal’s Top 40 Under 40 Award in 2006.

All recipients of the 2010 Awards of Excellence are highly deserving of the honour and are great examples of the quality of insurance brokers and brokerages throughout Ontario.

IBAO announces its Lead Sponsorship of the Ontario Legislature Internship Programme (OLIP) at Queen’s Park

Posted by IBAO

IBAO is so proud to announce that the association has become the lead sponsor of the 2010 Ontario Legislature Internship Programme (OLIP) at Queen’s Park.

OLIP is a non-partisan, educational internship designed to offer recent university graduates the opportunity to work at Queen’s Park for both a Government Member of Provincial Parliament and an Opposition Member of Provincial Parliament during a ten month placement. During their placement, OLIP interns also have the opportunity to travel to other legislatures around the country and to London, England!

Dr. Henry Jacek, Director of OLIP had this to say about IBAO’s sponsorship:

"The Ontario Legislature Internship Programme (OLIP) greatly values enthusiastic supporters, like IBAO. As OLIP's new lead sponsor, IBAO will inspire other private sector organizations to support the educational activities of the interns.  Without generous sponsors such as IBAO, the interns would not get the career development education that is an integral part of the OLIP Programme.  This travel to other legislatures, supported by our sponsors, makes this programme unique among internship programmes."

IBAO's CEO, Randy Carroll couldn't be more proud of the announcement saying, "OLIP is a unique and prestigious programme, offering recent university grads a once in a lifetime opportunity to work with Ontario’s key decision makes. We are excited and so proud about expanding our relationship with OLIP by becoming their lead sponsor for 2010".

For more information about OLIP, visit http://www.olip.ontla.on.ca.

Government Subsidized Summer Student Hiring Program

Posted by IBAO

Service Canada has initiated a Canada Summer Jobs program, which focuses on encouraging not-for-profit organizations, public sector employers and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees to create jobs that not only meet their needs, but also benefit students looking to gain work experience.

This program is subsidized by the Canadian Government and offers successful applicants in the private sector (with 50 or fewer full-time employees) reimbursement of up to 50% of the minimum wage in Ontario for up to 16 weeks of full-time student employment. Effective March 31, 2010, minimum wage in Ontario will be $10.25/hr, which equates to a $5.12/hr subsidy.

If you are considering hiring a student to help you through the busy summer months, the time to act is now, as the application period for Canada Summer Jobs 2010 is from February 1 to February 26, 2010.

IBAO Member Offices that may be interested in applying for this program can do so online at www.servicecanada.ca; call 1-800-935-5555, or visit your local Service Canada Centre.

Before completing an application, IBAO Members are advised to consult the Canada Summer Jobs Applicant Guide (on the Service Canada website) and review the local priorities for your geographical area. Please note that applications should be aligned with the local priorities of a given geographical area in order to maximize the likelihood of your office becoming a successful applicant to this program.
